Children's University
What is the Children’s University?
Children’s University is a charity that works in partnership with schools to develop a love of learning in children. We do this by encouraging and celebrating participation in extra-curricular Learning Activities at validated Learning Destinations. The impact of these activities is proven to be positive which is why we’re committed to creating a level playing field of opportunity and opening up access to children of all backgrounds.
By the time a child turns 18, they will have spent just 19% of their waking life in a classroom. Children’s University is about making the most of the remaining 91%.
Research shows that participation in extra-curricular activities can positively impact on attainment, increase a pupil’s positive identification with school, and build self-confidence and resilience. Research also shows that children that do not have access to these opportunities fall behind, lack confidence, and fail to develop career aspirations. The resulting attainment gap is so significant that 25% of children from the most disadvantaged backgrounds achieve below expected attainment levels.
Children's University works closely with all kinds of learning providers and activity leaders to offer children the widest variety of opportunities. When they complete an hour of extra-curricular activity, the children receive a “stamp” in their passports which build up to earn them awards, certificates, diplomas and degrees at a graduation at the end of the school year.
For children, this means that through Children’s University they can participate in activities in their own school but beyond the classroom (lunch time and extra-curricularclubs), as well as within their local community (libraries, sports clubs, museums and other local destinations) alongside activities at home (self-led, online or downloadable) and activities run by our national partners (retailers such as Pets at Home, and with organisations like Forestry England). Each child’s journey through our programme is as unique as they are.
