Handwriting

We use a scheme -Teach Handwriting- to teach the skill of handwriting. The scheme reinforces consistency in planning, promoting a consistent use of language and terminology to support the children’s learning as they progress. When children are learning to write there is a stronger emphasis on the teaching of the skills required to hold a pen and form letter of the correct size and orientation with up to 4 taught lessons a week, however as children become more confident this reduces until there is one lesson in year 3 and 4. The children have dictation practice in years 5 and 6 to develop their notetaking and speed. In addition to this, teachers will look for opportunities for practise and review of the letter shape or join where necessary. To find out more click here
